Main Defects of Vehicle Technical Inspection

This document provides a simple summary for vehicle owners in Costa Rica about the different types of issues they might encounter during the technical vehicle inspection (RTV). These issues are classified into three categories: Minor Defects (DL), Major Defects (DG), and Dangerous Defects (DP).

Identification

Minor Defects (DL): Not applicable.

Major Defects (DG):
- Minor documentation errors, such as mismatched information.
- Missing information in the vehicle's documents.

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Tampering with the chassis number or VIN that raises doubts about the vehicle's identity.

Exterior Condition, Body, and Chassis

Minor Defects (DL):
- Minor body damage that does not affect safety.

Major Defects (DG):
- Significant rust or corrosion on the body or chassis.
- Wear that could impact safety.

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Critical structural damage that threatens to detach vehicle parts.

Interior Condition

Minor Defects (DL):
- Minor issues inside the vehicle that do not affect functionality.

Major Defects (DG):
- Poor condition of seat belts.
- Damaged or missing required rearview mirrors.

Lighting and Signaling

Minor Defects (DL):
- Light bulbs that do not function correctly.

Major Defects (DG):
- Exterior lights with incorrect alignment.
- Installation of unauthorized decorative lights.

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Missing important lights such as brake or turn signals.

Emissions

Major Defects (DG):
- Gas emissions that exceed permitted limits.
- Excessive noise that surpasses established levels.

Brakes

Major Defects (DG):
- Worn or leaking brakes.

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Brakes that do not function at all.

Steering

Major Defects (DG):
- Issues with the steering wheel or steering bars.

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Critical failures in the steering system that make it difficult to control the vehicle.

Axles and Suspension

Minor Defects (DL):
- Slight wear on shock absorbers or springs.

Major Defects (DG):
- Defective shock absorbers.
- Tires in poor condition.

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Risk of detachment or serious suspension failures.

Engine and Transmission

Major Defects (DG):
- Oil or fuel leaks.

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Critical problems in the engine or transmission that could cause accidents.

Other

Major Defects (DG):
- Issues in vehicles with special requirements like taxis or public transport.

Special Situations

Dangerous Defects (DP):
- Conditions that prevent completing the inspection.
